Chapter 20
Hail thrashed against Ryanâs office window. The city had been drenched with rain for hours.
âMr. Blake? A Dr. Stone is here to see you. I mentioned you were leaving, but he is being persistent. What would you like me to do, sir?â Unlike Jessieâs receptionist, Ryanâs assistant was polite and respectful. At nineteen, she had gained his admiration immediately during her interview. Three years later, she still held that respect.
He looked once again at the pouring rain, deciding it would be just as well to stick around the office awhile and give it a chance to let up. âItâs all right, Jill. Iâll see him.â He finished shoving papers into his briefcase and quickly closed it.
After Breccaâs death, Ryan had invested her fortune into various areas. He regularly spent time at his city office watching over his assets. His successes helped lessen depressionâs hold on him. Breccaâs horse-breeding organization had brought several interested buyers, but Ryan had refused to sell. After the excitement of the stock market wore off, he had decided to put more effort into restoring Breccaâs business. After a couple years, his efforts paid off, and he had become absorbed in the industry. Buying and selling horses became his passion.
Elliott entered, his calm demeanor true to form. âHello, Ryan. I figured youâd leave early today. I wanted to talk a few minutes.â Elliott sat in a chair, unbuttoned his suit coat, and crossed his legs, a sign that he intended on staying a while.
âWhatâs up?â Ryan inquired from behind his desk.
âI would like to know how to contact Jessie.â Elliott appeared relaxed, yet his fingers were nervously tapping at his legs.
Ryan answered with a smile. âCâmon, Elliott, weâve been over this. I canât tell you anything.â He picked up his briefcase and headed toward the door. âYouâve wasted your time and mine if thatâs all you came for.â
âI figure sheâs probably at your cabin. It wonât take me long to find out for sure. I was just hoping youâd make it easier. Iâm beginning to wonder about your motives.â Ryan knew Elliott was purposely trying to discomfit him.
âMotives?â Ryan let go of the door handle and turned to face Elliott.
âSheâs incredibly beautiful,â Elliott said coyly. âYou two alone at that cabin of yours. And if my memory serves me, itâs been quite some time since youâve been with a woman. Things happen. Itâs easy to fall under her spell. So, naturally I question your motives. Itâs not like it hasnât happened before.â
Ryan felt himself pushed toward confrontationâs precipice. âIn an ugly mood, are we? You didnât question my motives a few weeks ago when you called in your marker. You invited me into this part of your life. I didnât volunteer.â Ryan slammed his office door.
âJill, lock my office on your way out. Call the police to remove Dr. Stone if heâs still there in five minutes!â His anger needed to be vented.
Fifteen minutes later, Ryan checked his rearview mirror. He was certain Elliott wasnât following, but he wanted to be safe.
