Chapter 20

Hail thrashed against Ryan’s office window. The city had been drenched with rain for hours.

“Mr. Blake? A Dr. Stone is here to see you. I mentioned you were leaving, but he is being persistent. What would you like me to do, sir?” Unlike Jessie’s receptionist, Ryan’s assistant was polite and respectful. At nineteen, she had gained his admiration immediately during her interview. Three years later, she still held that respect.

He looked once again at the pouring rain, deciding it would be just as well to stick around the office awhile and give it a chance to let up. “It’s all right, Jill. I’ll see him.” He finished shoving papers into his briefcase and quickly closed it.

After Brecca’s death, Ryan had invested her fortune into various areas. He regularly spent time at his city office watching over his assets. His successes helped lessen depression’s hold on him. Brecca’s horse-breeding organization had brought several interested buyers, but Ryan had refused to sell. After the excitement of the stock market wore off, he had decided to put more effort into restoring Brecca’s business. After a couple years, his efforts paid off, and he had become absorbed in the industry. Buying and selling horses became his passion.

Elliott entered, his calm demeanor true to form. “Hello, Ryan. I figured you’d leave early today. I wanted to talk a few minutes.” Elliott sat in a chair, unbuttoned his suit coat, and crossed his legs, a sign that he intended on staying a while.

“What’s up?” Ryan inquired from behind his desk.

“I would like to know how to contact Jessie.” Elliott appeared relaxed, yet his fingers were nervously tapping at his legs.

Ryan answered with a smile. “C’mon, Elliott, we’ve been over this. I can’t tell you anything.” He picked up his briefcase and headed toward the door. “You’ve wasted your time and mine if that’s all you came for.”

“I figure she’s probably at your cabin. It won’t take me long to find out for sure. I was just hoping you’d make it easier. I’m beginning to wonder about your motives.” Ryan knew Elliott was purposely trying to discomfit him.

“Motives?” Ryan let go of the door handle and turned to face Elliott.

“She’s incredibly beautiful,” Elliott said coyly. “You two alone at that cabin of yours. And if my memory serves me, it’s been quite some time since you’ve been with a woman. Things happen. It’s easy to fall under her spell. So, naturally I question your motives. It’s not like it hasn’t happened before.”

Ryan felt himself pushed toward confrontation’s precipice. “In an ugly mood, are we? You didn’t question my motives a few weeks ago when you called in your marker. You invited me into this part of your life. I didn’t volunteer.” Ryan slammed his office door.

“Jill, lock my office on your way out. Call the police to remove Dr. Stone if he’s still there in five minutes!” His anger needed to be vented.

Fifteen minutes later, Ryan checked his rearview mirror. He was certain Elliott wasn’t following, but he wanted to be safe.
